Minutes of the meeting of 7/17/14
Meeting Opened at: 4pm
Select Board Members Present: Wayne Burkhart, Chairperson, Scott Jenssen and Kenn Basler
Also in attendance for parts of the meeting: Jacob Edelman for the Monterey News, Steve Weisz, Maynard Forbes and Shawn Tryon
The Board called this meeting to review the final offer to Shawn as the Director of Operations and to discuss winter operations.
Maynard explained that the crew works as a group, if one goes out all go out plowing. Three of the crew members rotate on a weekly basis checking the weather and radar and roads to have them ready for the school buses and morning commutes which accounts for about 300 hours of overtime in the winter (100 per member). Maynard has always assisted in plowing with the crew. Maynard stated that the only way that the Director would be unable to plow would be to hire a 4th person as at least 4 people are needed during a storm, sometimes more (this is when outside contractors are called in).
It was agreed that Shawn will continue to plow as the Director and this policy could be looked at again at a later date. Shawn was offered $65,000/yr with no overtime. A motion was made to appoint Shawn for one year with a review at 6 months and one year at a salary of $65,000/yr which will include plowing and no overtime. The motion was seconded and unanimously approved.
Shawn requested to be given one week’s vacation during his first year of work instead of after one year as the town bylaws and handbook state. A motion was made to grant Shawn his request of one week’s paid vacation during his first year. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.
Shawn will begin work on the 28th of July. Maynard will make sure Shawn is up to speed on all the open projects including RT 57, RT 23, Jaime’s Court and the dam behind the library. Maynard has also offered to be available via phone to Shawn.
A motion was made and unanimously approved to adjourn the meeting at: 4:32pm
